Why infodancer?

When I was a young programmer, I ran across a book called The Long Run by Daniel Keys Moran. This was not the first book I read that featured a programmer as the main character, but it was the first where the programmer was cool.

You might say it made an impression.

The book introduces terminology for its various characters according to what they do on the Internet. The main character is a Player, what most people today would call a hacker, a cracker, or both. The antagonists were called Datawatch, effectively the internet police. And the people who made their living online, within the law, were webdancers.

But that domain was already taken, so I registered infodancer.

The series is still in progress, but currently includes:

“The Crystal Wind is the storm, and the storm is data, and the data is life. You have been slaves, denied the storm, denied the freedom of your data. That is now ended; the whirlwind is upon you… Whether you like it or not.” – Daniel Keys Moran
